An Odd Double Standard

Roger’s Rules » Why It’s OK for the U.S. Govt. to Burn Bibles But Condemn Burning the Koran

Yep, you read that right.  Seems some folks sent the soldiers in the field some Bibles, but they were instead burned.  Because:
the U.S. government determined that  the presence of Bibles in this “devoutly Muslim country” might inflame the natives.
Okay does that sound like we're belittling the locals over there by calling them natives that are easily inflamed by the presence of books?  Now Roger goes on to explain how our soldiers are ordered to handle Koran's and such but I'm just going to point out this simple fact:

It doesn't matter.
Seriously it doesn't matter if every soldier over there is carrying a Bible, that's not going to piss them off any more than the fact that we're there already has!  Those that don't like us and want to kill folks are going to hate us and continue to try and kill folks with our without bibles, so why burn them?  Seriously there isn't any scoring of "brownie points" with these guys they want us dead with or without our bibles.  Last time I checked a suicide bomb, an IED, an airplane, or an RPG doesn't check to see if there are Christians or Jews in range.  It just blows up and kills/maims everything in it's path.

So can we stop the PC bull sh*t and just fight the bloody war or get the hell out?  Honestly...

I think they're making a huge deal out of nothing. The Bibles they got rid of were written in the local languages of Afghanistan, and obviously weren't meant for our troops. Whatever church sent them may or may not have sent them in good will, but either way it was a poor decision on their part. From there it is easy to claim that we're trying to convert the religion of the locals.

I don't believe any one is worried about further inciting the terrorists. But right now, the way we've been fighting this war as well as the war in Iraq has heavily relied on cooperation with the local populace. With support of those people, the war will end much faster. By keeping these Bibles from being distributed as they were intended, we avoid giving the appearance that we're there to stamp out their religion.

This doesn't mean I agree with the way military members are ordered to handle the Koran. Nor do I agree with burning the Bibles as that sends the wrong message to the Christian churches in our own country. I agree that the Bibles should not have been sent back to whomever sent them (they might have tried to send them back through another agency). It would probably have been a better decision to have the Bibles sent back to a military base in the US before deciding if and how to get rid of them. Burning them though is silly, especially with Reverend Jones' fiasco of burning Korans. Understand though, that the US wasn't trying to send a message by burning the Bibles, just that military policies combined to dictate that we couldn't have them over there for distribution, thus they needed to be gotten rid of, and since we burn all our trash in deployed locations, that's what happened to them.

Just my two cents from reading the post, article linked, and article the article linked to. Those comments on the first article are pretty bad though. Can't tell if there are some trolls in there, or if some of those folks are actually being serious.
